A union of Zara store assistants has canceled its plans to go on strike after the company agreed to offer a 25% increase in pay.

The decision averted another round of strike that would have seen nearly 1,000 store workers from Zara and other Inditex brands walk out on December 23, 2022, and January 7, 2023, in protest of the company’s compensation offer. Previously, unionized store workers went on a two-day strike on Black Friday.

As per the agreement, Inditex will pay store workers an additional $341 per month who work in one of the company’s 44 stores in A Coruña, where Inditex’s headquarter is located. In addition, unionized workers will receive a one-time bonus of $1056 (€1000) in February, a $21 increment in November 2023, and a $42 raise in 2024, according to CIG union leader and Zara retail assistant Carmiña Naveiro.

“Our salaries as shop assistants will go up by 25% from January in A Coruña,” Naveiro said.

The pay increase marks a victory for union workers, who were previously promised a $211 increase in salary by 2024.

Most Zara store assistants in A Coruña currently earn an average salary between $1118 and $2011 per month.
