Walmart Lays Off 2,300 Warehouse Workers — Retail Bum
Retail giant Walmart is slashing the number of workers supporting its fulfillment operations, with plans to lay off 2,300 warehouse workers.
The company plans to eliminate 1,050 workers at its fulfillment center in Forth Worth, Texas and another 600 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, according to the company’s WARN notices.
Additionally, workers employed at facilities in Florida, New Jersey and California will be impacted.
Affected employees can apply for other open positions within the company or at Sam’s Club stores during a pre-determined paid job search period. Depending on their eligibility, they will also be entitled to receive severance pay and other support services.
The layoffs come after the company warned investors that it was expecting slow sales and profit growth.
“The consumer is still very pressured,” Walmart CFO John Rainey said in February. “And if you look at economic indicators, balance sheets are running thinner and savings rates are declining relative to previous periods. And so that’s why we take a pretty cautious outlook on the rest of the year.”
Still, the company has yet to make deep cuts like Amazon, which has so far let go of nearly 30,000 jobs since the start of the year, according to CNN.
