Victoria’s Secret Hires Sofia Jirau As Its First Model With Down Syndrome
Victoria’s Secret has chosen model Sofia Jirau, who suffers from Down syndrome, as the face of its latest intimates collection called Love Cloud.
The 24-year-old Puerto Rican model began modeling three years ago and has been featured by the intimates retailer for the first time.
“Even if they have Down syndrome, they can still model, they can still have jobs,” Jirau told the Wall Street Journal.
In addition to Jirau and several other models, the campaign also features women who work in various other professions. Model Gia Kelsey works as a design consultant, for example. Yacine Ndaw, another model in the campaign, works as a production coordinator.
“Love Cloud Collection is a major moment in the brand’s evolution,” said Raúl Martinez, head creative director of Victoria’s Secret, in a company statement.
“From the cast of incredible women that bring the collection to life, to the incredible inclusive spirit on set, this campaign is an important part of the new Victoria’s Secret standard we are creating.”
The intimates retailer noted that the Love Cloud collection has been designed using comfier pads, softer fabric, fully adjustable straps for all-day comfort and flexibility without compromising on appearances.
The Love Cloud collection offers six silhouettes, including a smooth demi, half-pad plunge, a push-up plunge, and three matching panties, including two fully adjustable styles — a first for the brand.
The move to feature models such as Jirau, Kelsey and Ndaw amplifies Victoria’s Secret’s strategic move to become a more relatable brand, a drastic shift from what it was once known for — utter perfection and seemingly dysmorphic, unrealistic body expectations.
Just recently, the lingerie label teamed up with TikTok star, Remi Bader, to launch the label’s XXL swimwear product line. Bader was also appointed as Victoria’s Secret’s newest brand ambassador and size consultant. Through her new role, Bader will advise and participate in various brand events as well as activations and curate a collection of her favorite Pink items.
The Love Cloud collection starts at $39.50 for bras and $16.50 for panties and is available in sizes 32A-40DDD and XS-XXL. Love Cloud is available nationwide in-stores and online.
