Twitter reversed its decision to ban links to all other social media platforms on Sunday evening.

The ban would have prevented Twitter users from including links in their bios or tweets to other social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Post and Nostr, and link aggregators such as linktr.ee and link.bio.

“We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter,” the company tweeted.

Under the policy, the company intended to delete all accounts created solely to promote other social networks and all existing live links to those mentioned social platforms. Furthermore, it planned to temporarily suspend all users with links to other social platforms in their bios before asking them to delete the links.

The company had planned to only allow links to the aforementioned social platforms for users willing to leverage Twitter’s paid promotion feature.

The policy drew instant backlash from users, leading the social network to delete its Tweet and supporting pages detailing its decision. The cached version can still be accessed here.

The news comes days after Twitter suspended the accounts of several prominent tech journalists, falsely accusing them of sharing the real-time location of CEO Elon Musk.
