A “Stop Shein” campaign led by European parliamentarian Raphaël Glucksmann is gaining momentum in France.

The campaign, which has so far garnered 100,000 signatures, accuses the fast fashion giant of relying on forced labor to support its supply chain and for its vast environmental impact from introducing thousands of poor-quality clothing articles and plastic into the market on a daily basis.

“Overconsumption, extolled by Shein, is a weapon of mass climate destruction,” the petition says.

The campaign is asking Bruno Le Maire, France’s minister of the economy, to regulate Shein’s marketing efforts that promote overconsumption. It also asks for a delisting or ban on websites that pump out more than 1,000 new styles daily.

The latest campaign adds to several policies currently being developed in France to push the fashion industry to become more sustainable.

Across the pond, advocacy groups in the U.S., with support from lawmakers, have launched a “Shut Down Shein” campaign, asking the Securities and Exchange Commission to ensure that the company is not using forced labor in China before it files to go public in the U.S.

While Shein has continued to defend its position and has invested in hiring lobbyists and improving its image as a sustainability-conscious organization, the efforts have done little to improve the company’s image.
