Ever since ChatGPT exploded on the scene, the interest in artificial intelligence (AI) has been on rapid fire, with retailers not wasting any time capitalizing on the possibilities of OpenAI’s solution.

Just last week, online secondhand marketplace, Mercari, unveiled its shopping assistant tool, Merchat AI, which utilizes AI to provide product recommendations.

Shortly after, German eCommerce giant Zalando introduced its own ChatGPT-powered tool designed to assist shoppers in finding fashion items based on queries or terms. Meanwhile, in March, payment platform and shopping service provider Klarna announced its collaboration with OpenAI to offer personalized product suggestions to users.

The recent proliferation of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools has sparked considerable interest among retailers as they recognize the technology’s potential to enhance productivity and drive new use cases. And while governments and regulatory bodies have expressed concern over the lack of oversight surrounding the technology, many companies remain undeterred and are actively exploring ways to integrate it into their operations. As a result, customer service has emerged as one of the earliest testing grounds for these cutting-edge tools.
