Rebecca Minkoff has been acquired by Los Angeles-based diversified apparel company, Sunrise Brands, in a deal that is estimated to be valued at $13 million to $19 million.

Minkoff, the namesake designer of the New York-based fashion label, is expected to serve as the chief creative officer. Meanwhile, Uri Minkoff, the brand’s chief executive officer, is expected to transition into a senior adviser role that will be focused on innovation.

The sale marks an end to the 16-year-old company’s financial difficulties that were brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. During an interview conducted in June 2021, Minkoff revealed that the brand had to abruptly cancel orders and, like many brands, make a hard business pivot and embrace a direct-to-consumer ( DTC) business approach.

“The pandemic made everything come to a glaring halt for a good six to nine months,” said Minkoff last year.

“We’re now back working with these stores and just ensuring that we’re prepared for a different relationship, not in a bad way at all. We want to make sure whenever we do business, we’re as profitable as we can be. It’s not about being everywhere; it’s about optimizing each store that we’re in so that we’re in the ones that are doing the most business.”

Through the acquisition, Rebecca Minkoff joins a portfolio of brands, including NYDJ, Diane Gilman, Joie, Equipment, Current/Elliott, Skinnygirl and Donald Pliner, that are owned by Sunrise Brands. The company engages in private label work and has collaborated with celebrities such as Melissa McCarthy and Eva Longoria.

Sunrise Brands is currently headed by chairman and founder, Gerard Guez.
