Olaplex Gets Sued for Causing Hair Loss — Retail Bum
Beauty brand Olaplex, a hot favorite among TikTok and Instagram influencers, is facing a lawsuit from dozens of users who claim “serious injury.”
A total of 30 women have filed a case against the company’s №0 through №9 products, which allegedly cause hair loss and bald patches, breakage, brittle hair, and scalp irritation.
In the lawsuit, plaintiffs argue that the ingredients in Olaplex products trigger an allergic reaction and are, in fact, banned in Europe. Some of the plaintiffs claim that after using the company’s products, they had breakage and hair splits, causing hair to look “unkept and as if it were cut with a weedwhacker.” Meanwhile, one of the other plaintiffs claims that using the Olaplex caused her hair to lose her once-defined curls and waves and made them frizzy and straight-ish, according to CNN.
Olaplex has so far denied the claims and released independent test results in its defense.
“We have publicly released test results from independent third-party laboratories, going above and beyond industry standards, to demonstrate this. We have full confidence and believe in the safety and efficacy of our products,” a company spokesperson said. “There are a wide variety of reasons for hair breakage or hair loss, as medical and scientific experts have publicly stated, including lifestyle, various medical conditions and medications, the aftereffects of Covid, skin conditions and more.”
The company’s products, ranging from $30 to $90, are sold today by several major retailers, including Sephora and Ulta.
