Nordstrom Pulls Out of Canada — Retail Bum
Nordstrom is wrapping up its business in Canada, closing all 13 store locations in the country.
The retailer has filed for protection from creditors under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCA), the Canadian equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. The move marks the end of a nearly decade-long run for the department store chain, which has struggled to find its footing amidst changing consumer behaviors.
The company currently operates six Nordstrom stores and seven Nordstrom Rack locations, and it employs nearly 2,330 people, all of whom will lose their jobs.
“We entered Canada in 2014 with a plan to build and sustain a long-term business there. Despite our best efforts, we do not see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business,” the company said, adding that its Canadian business has lost money in every single year of operation.
While the company plans to fulfill any existing orders that were placed on Nordstrom.ca earlier this week, it is no longer accepting new orders.
Pending approval from CCA, Nordstrom plans to launch liquidation sales starting March 20, 2023. All sales will be final and no exchanges will be permitted, according to CBC.
Nordstrom is reportedly the second big chain to exit the Canadian market. Last month, Bed Bath & Beyond revealed that it was shutting all 65 stores.
