French champagne maker Moet Hennessy will begin rebranding its champagne as sparkling wine in the Russian market in compliance with the country’s new law.

The company’s decision comes after President Vladimir Putin signed a law last week requiring non-Russian wine producers of sparkling wine, including those from Champagne, to brand their products as sparkling wine on the back of the bottle. The law, however, does not require any changes to the label in front of the bottle.

Only makers of Russian “shampanskoye” are allowed to use the term going forward.

Moet Hennessy, which is part of the LVMH group and the maker of brands such as Veuve Clicquot and Dom Perignon, had to suspend deliveries to Russia to remain compliant with the new law. The company is now working on changing labels on its bottles.

“The MH Champagne Maisons have always respected the legislation in force wherever they operate, and will resume deliveries as quickly as possible once these adjustments are made,” the company said in an emailed statement.
