Meta Faces $3.2B Class Action Lawsuit In The UK
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing a $3.2 billion class-action lawsuit in the U.K. for allegedly abusing its market dominance by forcing 44 million users to surrender their data to access its platform.
The lawsuit alleges that the social media platform made billions of pounds by imposing unfair terms and conditions on the people of Britain who used Facebook between 2015 and 2019.
“In the 17 years since it was created, Facebook became the sole social network in the U.K. where you could be sure to connect with friends and family in one place,” said Lovdahl Gormsen, a senior adviser to Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), who filed lawsuit against Facebook.
“Yet, there was a dark side to Facebook; it abused its market dominance to impose unfair terms and conditions on ordinary Britons, giving it the power to exploit their personal data.”
Gormsen claims that Facebook generated deep data profiles of its users using tools such as Facebook Pixel, which gave the company an “all-seeing picture” of how users engaged online.
Meta refuted the claim and said that users engage with Facebook because it delivers value to them and “they have meaningful control of what information they share on Meta’s platforms and who with.”
The latest case against Meta comes just days after the company lost in its effort to strike down a lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the U.S.
