Mcdonald’s China Brings Exercise Bikes To Its Restaurants

Eating cheeseburgers won’t count if you can quickly burn them off, right? McDonald’s China seems to think so.

The quick-service restaurant ( QSR) chain has added exercise bikes to some of its locations in China, where customers can be seen eating burgers and slurping down drinks, all while peddling away on bike seats.

The new addition to the McDonald’s locations in China was revealed in a TikTok video that has received over 35 million views.

The fitness machinery at various McDonald’s locations is seemingly ironic as the QSR is notorious for its seemingly unhealthy food options. The machinery featured is an extended single seat with pedals facing a wall and a dining table.

McDonald’s has since confirmed that it is currently testing out “The Green Charging Bike” at two locations in China. In September 2021, the Jieyang Wanda restaurant located in Guangdong Province rolled out the bikes and since then, the New Hualian restaurant location in Shanghai has followed suit.

The QSR’s move to install bikes is not necessarily an attempt to stray away from its unhealthy diet image but more of an attempt to evoke consciousness toward the environment while customers enjoy their McDonald’s meals. According to the company, when the bikes are used, they generate electricity that is used to power electronic devices like mobile phones. The strategy is part of McDonald’s China’s “Upcycle for Good” project, an initiative that is largely focused on creating products with plastic parts from recycled materials.
