MATCHESFASHION has hired ASOS’ former global creative head, John Mooney, as its executive creative director.

Mooney brings more than 20 years of experience working for global fashion brands. He began his career at Alexander McQueen and later worked as a senior designer for Britain’s Topman, which the Arcadia Group now owns.

In 2010, he was hired by ASOS, where he climbed the ranks to become the company’s creative director in January 2017.

“John is a fantastic addition to lead our creative teams and I am looking forward to working together,” said CEO Nick Beighton. “We remain focused on our ambition to be the luxury destination for customers in the world. John brings a depth of experience and leadership that will be invaluable as we enter our next phase of growth.”

Beighton was Mooney’s former boss at ASOS.

Mooney’s appointment comes just a week after MATCHESFASHION received a £60 million cash injection from private equity firm Apax Partners, which acquired the company in 2017. The investment will help the company manage high acquisition costs, challenges with predicting inventory and demand, and meeting its profit target. It will also help ease pains associated with high energy costs, fears of recession, and a decline in consumer spending.

In 2022, the company’s EBITA loss increased to o £23.8 million, up from £17.2 million the year before.
