Athleisure wear giant lululemon has made an investment in sustainable materials company Genomatica as it looks to replace its use of synthetic fibers with plant-based nylon.

While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the two companies will be engaging in a multi-year collaboration that will help lululemon produce sustainable clothing.

“Replacing the petrochemicals that make up many popular materials with more sustainable alternatives is a major step forward,” Patty Stapp, vice president of raw materials at lululemon.

The company’s investment in Genomatica is part of its effort to reduce the overall climate impact of its products and achieve the goals set in its October 2020 Impact Agenda. The company is also working with other alternate product companies such as Mylo, which manufactures mushroom-based leather, and LanzaTech, a company that produces polyester using recycled materials.

Lululemon is far from being the only company that is looking to use natural fibers for making athleisure. Yesterday, Allbirds debuted a new line of athleisure products made entirely using natural fibers. Other activewear brands such as Nike and Adidas are also making similar efforts and choosing to use recycled and environment-friendly materials to manufacture their products.
