Kanye West Names Former Nike Director As New Head Of Yeezy Design
Kanye West, now known as Ye, has appointed former Nike designer Nur Abbas as the head of design for Yeezy.
“I’m energized to work with Ye because he cares so deeply about design and moving culture forward,” said Abbas in a statement.
“At Yeezy and Gap, I’ve met some of the most talented people and teams, and I’m looking forward to working with them all to extend this new creative vision to the world.”
Abbas has been tasked with expanding the Yeezy brand and overseeing the direction and the launch of special projects under Adidas Yeezy, Yeezy Gap and the Yeezy Stem Player. Abbas will report directly to Ye.
Prior to joining Yeezy, Abbas spent over five years at Nike as the design director for the brand’s ACG line. Before Nike, Abbas had stints at Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Uniqlo.
Abbas’ appointment comes just days after Ye was barred from performing at the Grammy’s despite his five nominations, which include Album of the Year for Donda and the best rap song for “Jail.”
Ye was also suspended from Instagram for 24 hours after he publicly mocked Trevor Noah, who dedicated an entire segment on The Daily Show to Ye’s public outbursts, calling what ex-wife Kim Kardashian is going through as “terrifying.”
Ye responded to the segment by posting a screenshot of Noah’s Google search result, captioning the image with the lyrics to Kumbaya, replacing the word kumbaya with a racial slur.
The social media platform cited that the post violated Instagram’s hate speech, harassment, and bullying policies as reasons for temporarily suspending his account.
