Japan Airlines (JAL) wants business travelers and foreign tourists to pack nothing but socks and underwear on their next trip to Japan.

Instead, it wants them to use its new clothing rental service, which it is testing out between July 5 and August 31, 2023.

The new “Any Wear, Anywhere” service aims to tap into the surge in post-pandemic tourism and cater to visitors’ needs, more and more of whom are becoming environmentally conscious. At the same time, the airline is hoping that the new offering will encourage travelers to rent clothes instead of bringing extra luggage.

To use the service, customers can head to the Any Wear, Anywhere website, where they can select the type of clothing they want, the total number, and the reason for their visit, among other things. Customers must also provide their flight booking number, pickup and return dates for rented clothes, and destination. The service will start from ¥5,000 (approximately $35).

The airline has partnered with Sumitomo Corporation to procure, launder, and deliver clothes. Meanwhile, Wefabrik has been selected as the clothing partner responsible for offering “ethical” and “organic” made-in-Japan products, which will all be sourced from the excess inventory of retailers and other pre-owned clothing platforms.

As the service sees an uptick in usage, the airline plans to measure changes in the total luggage weight carried by inbound passengers and use the data to calculate the total reduction in carbon emissions resulting from the reduced weight of the aircraft.
