IKEA US Is Piloting A Buy Back & Resell Service

IKEA U.S. today announced the launch of its Buy Back & Resell service, marking its first major step toward becoming a circular company by 2030.

The service is currently being piloted at the company’s Conshohocken store in Pennsylvania for a limited time, with the goal of making it a permanent offering at all U.S. stores in the future.

Under the pilot program, customers can take their gently used IKEA furniture to the store and receive a store credit in exchange. All furniture is assessed for its age, condition and functionality and, if accepted, will be sold in the store’s AS-IS section at affordable rates. The program is currently only available for fully assembled and functional IKEA furniture. The company does not plan to accept any recalled products and products sold under particular categories such as Chests of Drawers.

“We hope the Buy Back & Resell service inspires our customers to live a more sustainable life at home while giving their used furniture another life and a second home,” said Jennifer Keesson, country sustainability manager for IKEA U.S.

The rollout of the company’s new pilot project, which will remain active between August 30 and September 19, comes just two months after the company pledged $1 billion in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation toward boosting sustainability and supporting clean energy projects in developing nations such as India, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. The fund will help reduce one billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and empower one billion people with distributed renewable energy.

Additionally, Ingka Group, which owns most of the IKEA stores, announced plans to invest $4.75 billion in green energy projects in April this year.
