British luxury department chain Harrods is launching a new sustainability initiative that would reward shoppers for returning hard-to-recycle items such as fragrance and nail polish bottles.

The initiative, first pilot tested at the H Beauty store in Milton Keynes, gives customers reward points, exclusive offers, and service discounts when they return five empty product bottles.

“The launch of MyBeauty Recycle & Reward marks another incredible milestone for Harrods and H beauty,” said Mia Collins, head of beauty at Harrods, in a statement.

“The launch of the scheme showcases our commitment to bringing a more circular and sustainable shopping experience to our H beauty customers, encouraging the H beauty community to recycle beauty packaging and products that are not able to be recycled by traditional kerbside collections.”

The company has partnered with waste management and recycling firm MYGroup to support the initiative. MYGroup offers an end-to-end solution that promises to “recycle the unrecyclable.”

Harrods’ initiative follows the footsteps of players such as MAC Cosmetics and Sephora, who allow their customers to bring back their empties for access to rewards and exclusive offers.

“MYGroup is trusted by a growing number of high-profile, forward-thinking partners in the retail space, who see the tangible, visible difference our in-store takeback schemes can make to meeting their sustainability goals,” said Steve Carrie, director at MYGroup.
