Giorgio Armani Teams Up To Launch the Apulia Regenerative Cotton Project — Retail Bum
The Armani Group is collaborating with the Sustainable Markets Initiative and the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance to introduce new sustainable farming practices in the Italian cotton industry.
The initiative called the Apulia Regenerative Cotton Project will see the development of an experimental agroforestry regenerative cotton site to test and scientifically assess new ways to implement sustainable cotton production in the country. The project will encourage landscape diversity, water conservation, and improvements in soil fertility.
In an announcement, the brand’s founder Giorgio Armani pointed to the massive impact of the textile industry on the planet and the need to bring in innovative ideas to create a meaningful difference.
“Actively participating in the development of agroforestry regenerative cotton, especially on Italian soil, is an important step and will also have a real impact on local communities,” Armani said.
The site will be located in Apulia, Italy, known for its mild climate and suitable for producing various crops. It will initially see the cultivation of cotton on one hectare of land and will gradually be expanded to a total of five hectares. Over the next five years, the site will be evaluated to assess the properties of the yielded cotton, the environmental impacts, and the production levels of different plots.
