Estée Lauder Suspends Executive Group President John Demsey Over Instagram Post
Estée Lauder has suspended its executive group president, John Demsey, without pay due to a recent Instagram post that included a racial slur.
The social media post featured a spoof book cover of the TV show “Sesame Street” and contained the N-word and jokes about COVID-19.
The post has since been removed from Demsey’s personal account.
“The content posted does not represent the values of The Estée Lauder Companies,” said the company in an internal memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal.
The internal memo did not reveal the length of the suspension.
In his role as executive group president at the makeup company, Demsey oversees a comprehensive portfolio of brands, including M·A·C, Clinique, BECCA, Too Faced, Smashbox, GLAMGLOW and TOM FORD BEAUTY.
In addition to his brand portfolio, Demsey leads the company’s enterprise-wide Creative Organization and oversees the Creative Center of Excellence, which is focused on the ongoing advancement of creative capabilities and talent across the company.
Prior to his current role, Demsey served as group president for ten years. Last May, Demsey marked 30 years at Estée Lauder.
Following the news, Estée Lauder’s shares closed 1.61% lower at $290.93 a share on Wednesday.
