Dolce & Gabanna Goes Fur Free
Dolce & Gabanna (D&G) plans to stop using fur across all of its collection starting this year, the Italian luxury group announced Monday in a joint statement with animal rights association Humane Society International.
“The entire fashion system has a significant social responsibility role that must be promoted and encouraged,” said D&G’s Communication and Marketing Officer, Fedele Usai.
While the brand is transitioning away from the use of animal fur to eco-friendly alternates, it will continue to collaborate with master furriers to preserve job and industry knowledge.
D&G is far from being the only brand that is moving away from using animal fur. With more consumers wanting to use sustainable alternates, several leading players in the fashion industry, such as Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Prada, and Versace, have all committed to ending the use of fur.
It is perhaps not surprising that Russia’s top fur retailer, Kalyaev, announced plans to close all its factories and sell its remaining inventory last month as the company is struggling with a decline in demand for fur products.
“Over the past two years, the world has changed tremendously. Some of [these changes] are not very pleasant for our business. Many high fashion companies began to refuse to use natural fur in their products. This has led to a wave of widespread abandonment of the cultivation and sale of raw furs around the world,” Kalyaev said in a statement.
