In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, global skincare brand, Dermalogica, will use recyclable pumps for its best-selling facial cleansers starting in 2022.

“The beauty industry has a pump problem,” said Aurelian Lis, Dermalogica’s chief executive officer. “Pumps are increasingly used but widely unsustainable. Today, we aim to fix the problem.”

While most pump bottles on the beauty shelf are seemingly made of recyclable plastics, they typically utilize an internal metal spring, which makes them difficult to recycle. Dermalogica is seeking to address this problem with a new design that involves the use of a plastic spring instead. The spring will be made using recyclable polyethylene, which is the same material that is used to produce the bottles, making it possible to dispose of the bottle and pump as one unit by simply placing it directly into the recycling bin.

The new mono-material pump will also be lighter and require less use of virgin plastic, ultimately decreasing demand for a non-renewable resource.

The skincare brand has teamed up with Aptar, a packaging company that designs, develops and innovates its product solutions with people and the planet in mind to provide customized and recyclable pumps. This new packaging solution caters to the rising sustainability demands amongst consumers. According to a recent study conducted by Wakefield Research, nearly 3 in 4 women (74%) revealed that sustainability is a must-have when it comes to self-care products.

The new solution also furthers Dermalogica’s sustainability mission and brings it closer to its goal of having 100% of its bottles designed to be reused, recycled, or composted by 2025.
