Daily Harvest Cuts More Than 20% of Staff — Retail Bum
Meal subscription company Daily Harvest has laid off 20% of its staff, equating to roughly 60 people.
The fresh round of layoffs follows a 15% headcount reduction that occurred last summer, just months after the company was sued for one of its products that caused gastrointestinal illnesses.
Daily Harvest’s subscription service offers products such as fruit smoothies and “Mylk,” which are triangular pods of almonds and salt that can be blended with water to produce nut milk. In June 2022, the startup recalled its French Lentil + Leek Crumbles offering after 470 people got ill from consuming the product, some of whom had to get their gallbladders removed.
Following the incident, Daily Harvest’s sales plummeted by half. However, a Daily Harvest spokesperson attributed its drop in sales to its reduction in marketing spend.
To date, Daily Harvest has raised more than $177 million from investors and was last valued at $1.1 billion, according to PitchBook data.
Daily Harvest’s latest round of layoffs adds to the more than 100,000 workers who have been let go since January 2023, according to the tracker Layoffs.fyi.
