Barbie’s New Doll with Down Syndrome Sets a New Standard for Inclusive Toy Representation — Retail Bum
Mattel is looking to expand its representation for children with the unveiling of its latest Barbie doll line with Down syndrome.
To create the newest Barbie, the company worked closely with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to ensure that the doll authentically represented individuals with Down syndrome.
NDSS is an organization that supports people with Down syndrome and their families by providing resources, advocating for policy change, and engaging with local communities. The design process for the new Barbie doll was informed by NDSS’s guidance and real-world experiences. This included every aspect of the design process, including the doll’s sculpture, clothing, accessories, and packaging.
“It was an honor working with Barbie on the Barbie doll with Down syndrome,” said NDSS President and CEO Kandi Pickard. “This means so much for our community, who for the first time, can play with a Barbie doll that looks like them. This Barbie serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate the power of representation. It is a huge step forward for inclusion and a moment that we are celebrating.”
