Apple To Manufacture 25 Percent of iPhones in India — Retail Bum

Apple is considering plans to manufacture a quarter of its iPhones in India as the company looks to diversify its production away from China.

“They’re [Apple] already at about 5–7% of their manufacturing in India. If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25% of their manufacturing,” said Piyush Goyal, India’s minister of commerce and industry, calling Apple “another success story.”

Currently, the company manufactures its smartphones in India at a Chennai-based factory that is operated by Taiwanese firm Foxconn.

In 2021, the tech giant began assembling a small share of its iPhone 14 models in India as strict COVID lockdowns in China and worker protests at the largest iPhone manufacturing facility in Zhengzhou, China impacted its supply chain. Prior to that, the company predominantly manufactured older versions of its iPhones in India.

While Apple is ramping up manufacturing in India, the company accounts for just a 5% share of its smartphone market. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook has long seen potential in the country.

Last year, the company’s consolidated revenue in the Indian market reached an all-time high of $4.03 billion, marking a 45% increase, with a record-high demand for its premium iPhone models.
