Amazon has launched a new initiative called the Anti-Counterfeiting Exchange (ACX) that will help retail stores label and track counterfeits.

The launch of the program is part of Amazon’s effort to curb organized crime on its platform and prevent fake merchandise from entering its warehouses.

The program will rely on anonymous contributions from stores and Amazon marketplace sellers, who will help flag counterfeiters to a third-party database. Participants will also be able to use the database to identify bad actors so they can avoid doing business with them. Similar data exchange programs are run by credit card companies with the goal of identifying scammers and their commonly used tactics, according to Reuters.

“We think it is critical to share information about confirmed counterfeiters to help the entire industry stop these criminals earlier,” said Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon’s vice president of selling partner services, in a statement.

The program’s launch builds on Amazon’s anti-counterfeiting initiative, which was kicked off in collaboration with several retailers from the apparel, home goods and cosmetics industry in 2021.

Amazon is reportedly also participating in a data pilot with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to flag and target low-value shipments that might be counterfeit products or violate other regulations.
