Amazon, Inditex And Patagonia Pledge Zero-Carbon Shipping By 2040
Retail heavyweights Amazon, Inditex and Patagonia, have pledged to achieve zero-carbon shipping by 2040 by joining the Cargo Owners for Zero-Emission Vessels (coZEV) coalition.
The coalition is led by the Aspen Institute, which constitutes a larger group of cargo companies that plan to switch their ocean freights to vessels that have zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Amazon, Inditex and Patagonia’s move to join the coalition is significant as the cargo shipping industry is estimated to result in 1 billion tonnes of climate pollution each year, accounting for 3 percent of all global emissions, according to coZEV. Under the Paris Climate Accord, the maritime shipping industry is required to switch to zero-carbon fuels by the bummid-2020s and be fully decarbonized by 2050.
Some of the other players that have joined the three companies to pledge zero-carbon shipping include Brooks Running, Patagonia, Tchibo, Unilever, Michelin, Frog Bikes and Ikea, FashionUnited reported.
“We are thrilled to co-launch this much-needed initiative,” said Edgar Blanco, director, net-carbon zero at Amazon. “The time to act is now and we welcome other cargo owner companies who want to lead on addressing climate change to join us in collaboration.”
The coZEV agreement aims to create zero-carbon maritime transportation corridors and it calls on governments to make policies that would make the transition to zero-carbon less expensive.
