Adidas And Allbirds Team Up To Launch Low-Carbon Running Shoe
Eight months after introducing the concept, Adidas and Allbirds have officially launched FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT, a low-carbon performance footwear that the two brands plan to make at scale.
“Our ambition is to take FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT from moonshot concept to something that sparks systemic change. We wanted to demonstrate how collaboration and an open-source mindset can create a halo effect across the industry and help make progress towards net zero,” said Brian Grevy, adidas’ executive board member of global brands.
The two brands plan to drop the shoe in limited quantities in four colorways at a $120 price point. New colorways are expected to be offered in spring next year.
The shoe’s design centers around the overall philosophy of “the art of reduction,” and patten efficiency was a huge consideration. The design teams involved in the development of the shoe took inspiration from what is known as the tangram principle, treating the pieces of material like a tangram puzzle. This approach helped the team develop a low-waste design that reduces carbon emissions.
“FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is an important reminder that we can achieve more together than we can separately, especially when it comes to the race against climate change,” said Tim Brown, co-founder and co-CEO at Allbirds.
“It’s been incredible to see this go from a simple yet far-fetched idea of the world’s lowest carbon footprint running shoe to a product that consumers can get their hands on in just two years — it’s a testament to the power of collaboration in the face of a daunting challenge.”
The collection will become available on the Adidas website, both retailers’ apps and in select stores.
